Huelva Energy Complex
A leading bioenergy complex in Spain
Magnon’s complex in Huelva, which predominantly uses agroforestry biomass certified under SURE standards, consists of two plants with a combined installed capacity of 125 MW. It is the largest biomass-based power generation centre in the country and one of the most advanced in Europe, capable of producing more than 800 GWh of renewable electricity per year through the valorisation of over 800,000 tonnes of local agroforestry biomass.
The plant utilises locally sourced biomass from agricultural crops such as olive groves, vineyards, fruit trees and almond trees—including firewood, prunings, leaves and by-products such as orujo (olive pomace)—together with forest biomass such as eucalyptus, pine, scrub, rockrose and mixed forest residues, as well as sawmill and cork by-products.
The facility holds SURE certification.
State-of-the-art environmental technology
Both plants incorporate the latest clean technologies—fluidised bed and grate boilers, nitrogen oxide reduction systems (SNCR), bag filters, electrostatic precipitators and dry desulphurisation—together with continuous emissions monitoring.
Innovation: biogenic CO₂ capture
In Huelva, the complex is also a key site within the project to advance Magnon’s renewable fuels platform, with initiatives for biogenic CO₂ capture and the production of e-methanol.
Commitment to the local environment
The complex supports nearly 3,300* direct, indirect and induced jobs, generates activity for dozens of local suppliers and acts as a lever for socioeconomic development in the area. In collaboration with public authorities and social stakeholders, it promotes a fair energy transition rooted in the community.
