Mérida Plant
Innovation and sustainability at the heart of Extremadura
Magnon’s plant in Mérida has an installed capacity of 20 MW and is a benchmark for operational efficiency and environmental commitment. It is capable of producing 160 GWh/year of renewable electricity from approximately 200,000 tonnes of sustainable biomass, making a significant contribution to clean power generation in Extremadura.
The plant utilises locally sourced biomass from agricultural crops such as olive groves, vineyards and fruit trees, together with forest biomass such as eucalyptus, pine and mixed forest residues, derived from woodland management and the surrounding agroforestry environment.
The facility holds SURE certification.
Local biomass and circular economy
The plant uses agroforestry biomass sourced from nearby areas, mainly agricultural residues and maintenance pruning. Its activity helps prevent fires, avoid emissions and promote the local economy. In addition, it fosters partnerships with small-scale suppliers to ensure a positive community impact.
The biomass consumed is certified under SURE standards, in compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive.
CO₂ capture for renewable fuels
The Mérida complex is also a key site within the project to advance Magnon’s renewable fuels platform, with initiatives for biogenic CO₂ capture and the production of e-methanol.
Territorial impact
The plant generates up to 480 direct, indirect and induced jobs according to the sectoral methodology of the Spanish Renewable Energy Companies Association (APPA Renovables). Its model of engagement with the local environment is based on transparency, local roots and collaboration with local entities.
